Organic Bulgarian rose oil (Rose otto) Rosa Damascena benefits:
Rose oil is produced in two main types; Rose absolute and Rose otto and both may be used for the same purposes.
Due to the production methods employed rose essential oils are very costly, commonly they are offered diluted/adulterated.
To guarantee the true qualities and effects special care should be taken to ensure that any rose oil you purchase is 100% pure, there are very many cheaper products which smell like rose oil, but have more association with the factory than nature. Additives and substitutes intended to bulk up or replace rose essential oil, whist maintaining a high scent impact may be actively dangerous in oils intended for therapeutic use.
A common error is that Rose essential oil is the same as Rose geranium oil, though both are attributed to Venus in the tables of correspondences used for centuries, before the arrival of conventional medicine.
Organic Rose Otto (Rose Oil)
Though it may seem counter-intuitive, Rose otto (sometimes referred to as attar of roses) is the more expensive of the two, it has been used since ancient times. Extracted by steam distillation from Rosa damascena, (the Damask Rose) and is a pale yellow or olive green oil with an unmistakable very rich, spicy floral scent. Pure Rose otto “freezes” at low temperatures of around room temperature with crystals visible.
100% pure rose otto maybe stored for as long as needed, provided you keep it in a cool dark place. There are reports of rose otto produced in the 1940s which is still in perfect condition.
Rose otto is the superior form of rose essential oil for aromatherapy, though due to cost, people sometimes utilise rose absolute instead. On the other hand, rose otto is extremely heady and you will probably find that you need to use much less in a blend than is required with other inferior/adulterated essential oils.
Ecomaat Bulgaria www.ecomaat.co.uk produce only certified organic Rose Otto, guaranteeing purity and never use Rose absolute in their cosmetics.
Rose Absolute (for reference only, we do not produce or sell this):
Rose absolute is extracted through solvent extraction, yielding a reddish orange or olive green oil with a much lighter floral scent, as you may instinctively anticipate from a rose oil. It is much more viscous than rose otto and solidifies at quite high temperatures, so much so that you may need to warm it in your hands before use.
You might come across two other types of rose oil, rose leaf absolute, which is used purely for flavouring and fragrance, and rosehip seed oil, which is effective in treating burns, scars / wrinkles and promotes tissue regeneration, though you will rarely find either on sale.
Both rose otto and rose absolute may be used for the same purposes.
